At the age of 17, he accepted the rank of archimandrite and was elected ruler of Montenegro - the spiritual and civil ruler of a small but independent country, the only one that did not submit to the Ottoman Empire. For twenty years of his reign, he not only took care of his homeland, but also created poems, drama in verse, and many large and small lyrical poems. Petr Petrovich Njegosh remained in literature as one of the greatest poets of the entire Slavic world.
