Wolfgang Köppen (1906–1996) is a German writer, author of the world famous novels “Pigeons in the Grass”, “Greenhouse”, “Death in Rome” published in Russian. Notes from a Dungeon was first published in 1948 under the name of Jacob Littner, a stamp dealer who lived through the horrors of the ghetto, miraculously survived, and one day told his story to a young German publisher, who published his notes on his experiences. Only forty-three years later, the famous German Wolfgang Koeppen admitted to the authorship of the book.
