Based on the ideas of structuralism and the Russian formal school, the author analyzes classical fantastic literature from Perrault’s fairy tales and the first European adaptations of “The Arabian Nights” to the short stories of Hoffmann and Edgar Poe (without touching on the so-called instrumental miraculous, i.e. science fiction) and ultimately derives the essential characteristics of fantasy as a genre: “... it represents the quintessence of all literature, because in it the challenging of the boundary between the real and the unreal, which is characteristic of all literature, occurs completely explicitly and is the focus of attention.”
