None of the American writers of the twentieth century, with the exception of Hemingway, had such an impact on world literature as Henry Miller. Fame came to him back in the 1930s, when, while living in Paris, he created the novel Tropic of Cancer, the hero of which sees sex as the only connection between people. The subsequent works “Tropic of Capricorn” and “Black Spring” strengthened the writer’s scandalous reputation and confirmed this point of view.

The collection “Insomnia, or the Devil on the Free” reveals to us a completely unexpected Miller - gentle, sensitive, reverent. This included several samples of G. Miller's short prose - that side of his work that for a long time seemed to be in the shadow of his novels, marked by bold experimentation. At the center of these works is the theme of a love feeling emerging and undergoing difficult metamorphoses.

The title of the book was given by a small masterpiece of the late G. Miller, created from fresh memories that had not yet stopped bleeding in 1970: “Insomnia, or the Devil on will."
