Pátik-Empatik lives in complete harmony with nature in the distant future, and his peculiarity is that he feels everything he sees and hears. In the second story from the series “Tales of Patik-Empatik,” Patik goes for a walk in the forest and, while trying to catch up with a langur monkey, accidentally breaks the trunk of an old chestnut tree. Patik-Empathik worries that because of him the tree is dehydrated, and microbes penetrate the wound, and the chestnut tells him about how, in the distant, environmentally terrible past, all the trees almost died at the hands of the leeches that then lived on Earth. Pathik-Empathik finds out how the worldwide underground network of wise trees was destroyed, and who saved the forests from thoughtless wholesale felling.
