The name of K. S. Pobedonostsev (1827–1907) was pronounced with trepidation - he was a consistent supporter of strict rule, a convinced cleric, and a church historian. Pobedonostsev served as chief prosecutor of the Holy Synod, the highest collegial governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church. Sukhoi, a strict moralist, married to a woman much younger than himself, inspired L. N. Tolstoy to create the image of Alexei Karenin, Anna’s husband (novel “Anna Karenina”) . The work of the “gray eminence” exalts power and superiors, giving both a divine, “infinitely terrible” meaning.
