The book explores themes related to the problem of image in modern visual culture. Starting, on the one hand, from the analysis of painting, from Raphael and Durer to Serres and Cruz-Diez, and analyzing, on the other hand, the foundations of the doctrine of veneration of images, the famous phenomenologist and theologian J.-D. Marion shows that the visible requires special conditions to appear, and these conditions are invisible. What is visible in itself, what is visible as a mere spectacle, can only be described in accordance with the logic of idol worship. This is precisely what characterizes the catastrophic situation of visuality in the modern technical era.
