American Elena Adams Keller (1880-1968) was born a normal, healthy child in the town of Tuscumbia, Alabama, into a wonderful old family. At the age of 19 months, after acute inflammation of the brain and stomach, Elena lost her sight and hearing, which for such a small child meant muteness. However, many years after this, Mark Twain had reason to say: in the 19th century there were two truly great people - Napoleon and Helena Keller.
