Mutualism, as a type of anarchism, goes back to P.Zh. Proudhon in France and Josiah Warren in the USA. He supports, as far as possible, an evolutionary approach to the creation of a new society. It emphasizes the importance of peaceful activities to create alternative social institutions within the existing society and to strengthen these institutions until they finally replace the existing state system; doing our best (as the IWW slogan goes) to “build the structure of a new society in the shell of the old” before we try to break that shell.
