The genetic nature of language is beyond doubt, and its components can be found in different species. Our closest relatives, the apes, certainly have the tools of thought and communication in basic forms. Even the Neanderthals, who were intelligent enough to bury the dead and keep fires going, had no means of expressing their thoughts.
