The book of the Italian philosopher Paolo Virno “The Grammar of Multitude” (2001), despite its small volume, represents a real theoretical revolution. Virno suggests thinking about modern society not in terms of various kinds of identities (“people”, “class”, “state”), but using the category “multitude” and related concepts (exodus, virtuosity, General Intelligence, cynicism, chatter, curiosity, etc.). According to his concept, the modern type of production (post-Fordism) leads to the fact that traditional social structures are replaced by dynamic “sets”, temporary communities and configurations of workers, combining mobility, avoidance of identity, synthesis of different types of activities based on flexibility and adaptability to changing social and economic conditions of life.
