The story “In the Prime of Years” - Agnonova’s “Lolita”, or more precisely anti-Lolita. The story is told from the girl's point of view, not from her admirer's point of view. She herself chooses an adult gentleman - contrary to the attitudes of society. Agnon chose the form not of a diary, but of a memoir - the heroine named Tirza remembers and talks about what happened to her over the past few years, since her mother died. The action takes place at the end of the last - beginning of our century, in Austro-Hungarian Galicia, in a Jewish town. Tirza tells her story not in colloquial Hebrew (Yiddish), but in the Hebrew that her teachers taught her, that is, in the book Hebrew of the Bible and praises. There was no living Hebrew in those days, hence the archaic and pseudo-biblical style of the narration: the narrator simply does not know another written language. Its linguistic equivalent would be the French diaries of educated Russian young ladies of the late 18th century or the Latin entries of European girls. The language of this story by Agnon differs sharply from the language of his other works. It is written in “feminine Hebrew.” While men studied the Talmud and other religious works written in Aramaic, women made do with the Bible with its different vocabulary. (So, in Japan during the time of Murasaki Shikibu, men wrote in Chinese, and women in Japanese.) The beginning of the story is written in blank verse and in the first edition it was printed as poetry, and not in continuous text.
