In the play, the leading roles are given to cockroaches. True, there is nothing specifically cockroach in them: we hear the voices of human consciousness, trying to comprehend the monstrous and apparently causeless incidents. Mentions of wings, whiskers and larvae do not change anything. As long as Henry or Angela speaks, they are human. They are unreasonable and wordless only for Plackett and Michael, who watch with curiosity how the heart and other organs cope “with conditions of almost complete immobility.” By contrasting two views on life: cockroaches and human (or: human and divine), the writer ironically highlighted both.
