Dogs became domesticated 7–12 thousand years ago. Even then, hounds, greyhounds, dachshunds, Spitz-type and other dogs were distinguished. In Ancient Egypt, during one of the dynasties of the pharaohs, there were 200 dogs of the Uau species, and 300 dogs of the Unzu species. Xenophon named two kinds of dogs: otter (beaver) and fox.
