Fascinated by Japan, its culture and landscapes, the famous modern illustrator Benjamin Lacombe from a young age dreamed of illustrating a collection of Lafcadio Hearn’s stories about the spirits and ghosts of the Land of the Rising Sun. Hearn was one of the first Westerners to receive Japanese citizenship. He is known for traveling to different provinces, collecting and recording Japanese fairy tales and legends about ghosts. For this collection, Lacombe created a whole bestiary of various creatures, forcing a new look at each story.
