Professor Panofsky's study of Gothic architecture and scholasticism occupies an outstanding place in a series of so-called Wimmer Readings, which in themselves are a notable cultural phenomenon. The readings were established and named after Boniface Wimmer, founder of the Benedictine Order in America; they were held at St. Vincent, and they were attended by such remarkable scientists as Jacques Maritain (Man's Approach to God), William Albright (To theistic humanism), Helen White (Prayer and poetry) and Elias Lowy (The most wonderful book in the world).
