Selma Lagerlf's novel The Wonders of the Antichrist takes place at the end of the 19th century in Sicily. The book condemns socialism as an anti-Christian ideology that rejects faith in God and calls on people to create a “paradise on earth.” The plot revolves around two sculptural images of Christ - one real, miraculous, and another fake, having the inscription "My kingdom only on earth" and symbolizing the godless socialist doctrine. It is this false image that becomes an object of worship, people attribute miracles to it, which then turn out to be false "miracles of the Antichrist" ..
