In 1903, the prose drama “Near the Secret” was published in the magazine “New Way”. It received favorable reviews, but was never reprinted or staged. None of Semenov’s peers had published such a significant, complex work by this time. The play belongs to the aesthetic world of the “new drama” of G. Ibsen, K. Hamsun, M. Maeterlinck, with which Chekhov’s dramaturgy is also connected. Some threads stretch from here to the plays of L. Andreev written subsequently.
