The highest level of education allowed the classic of Italian literature Giacomo Leopardi (1798–1837) to mislead not only the ordinary public, but also scientists. Several of his poems, passed off as translations from ancient Greek, became examples of high literary mystification. Translator Tatyana Stamova writes about this in more detail in the introductory note “Greek Odes and More.”
