The action of the story “Werther has already been written” (1979), entitled with a line by B. Pasternak, dates back to the time of the revolution. Its hero, the cadet Dima who miraculously escaped execution, perceives the terrible reality as a dream. The story describes phantoms-things and phantoms-people: black-skinned commissars with Mausers, the garage building in which the executions take place, Nahum the Fearless, establishing a world revolution in blood. The love of the main characters is based on blood and betrayal in the days when “the air smells of death” (B. Pasternak).
