The former military surgeon for a quiet life in provincial Getzenburg Dr. Altmann again finds himself in the thick of events. Having identified the photograph of the wanted criminal Yandra Hevel printed in the newspaper, the doctor reports it to the police as a law-abiding citizen, and now a reward has been promised for his head. The city police department, the mysterious group for which Hevel worked, and Detective Eisenhart - they all want to know who killed Hevel and where the secret documents that the deceased got disappeared. In such a situation, the doctor has no choice but to join the investigation... Story two, in which the narrator experiences several attempts on his life, raises the veil of secrecy over the science of death and visits the crow camp.
