In 1932, the outstanding German writer Lyon Feichtwanger published the novel “The Jewish War”, in 1935 the novel “Sons” followed, in 1945 “The Day Will Come”. Together they compiled a trilogy dedicated to the life of the Roman historian and military leader of Jewish origin Josephus Flavius. The priest of the first temple in Jerusalem, a patriot and participant in the Jewish uprising, Joseph ben Mattathias is faced with a painful choice: to accept captivity or to accept death, to go over to the side of the Romans and betray the faith of the fathers or perish. However, the future creator of the historical treatise “The Jewish War” chooses his own path, on which he is infinitely alone. While living in Rome and enjoying the patronage of the Flavians, he becomes the most devoted preacher of the unique role of the Jewish people in the history of mankind. In the work of Feichtwanger, a German of Jewish origin, forced to leave Germany with the coming to power of the Nazis, the themes of expulsion from his native country and the place of the Jewish people in the world acquire a special, deeply personal sound.
