Dumas' novella "Oton-ray" is a free treatment of a number of Lower Rhine (German and Dutch) legends inscribed in the specific historical context of the mid-fourteenth century. In this story, as in many of his other works, Dumas uses the method of combining fiction and reality: real toponyms, titles, surnames, names are attached in never-existing combinations to characters created by his imagination.
