Ernst Toller (1893–1939) German poet, expressionist playwright, revolutionary, head of the Bavarian Soviet Republic . Toller's plays did not come off the Soviet stage . Toller visited the USSR twice, in 1926 and in 1934. His memoirs about trips to the USSR, the USA, India and Palestine were included in the book Along and Across. Toller’s memoirs are full of mixed impressions about the country that is raising its head after the Civil War, a country experiencing unprecedented technical growth, the development of cities, universities, science, the press. He pays special attention to the changed role of a woman, a child . Toller carefully conveys the circumstances of meetings with revolutionary figures, leading writers of the 1920s, people of the theater.
