The novel takes place in the suburbs of Paris .. A young French woman, on whose behalf the story is being told, enters the house of an American officer from NATO structures. She falls in love with her charming, generous, fun host. And hates his beautiful wife, under the influence of some hidden grief gradually descending due to the propensity to alcohol. In a car accident, an American woman dies, her husband commits suicide. And only in the last lines of the novel it turns out that in fact was the cause of both deaths.
