"The Life, Adventures, Trials, and Observations of David Copperfield, Jr. of Grachevnik in Blanderston, described by himself (and never, in any case, not intended for printing)" - this was the original full title of the novel Its first issue was published in May 1849, followed by monthly, until November 1850. In the same year, the novel was published in a separate edition under the title “The Life of David Copperfield, told by himself”. Although in this book Dickens talked about some of the real events of his life, it is not the autobiography of the writer. Using individual facts of his biography, Dickens freely modified them in accordance with the plan of the novel; drawing images of his characters, he took only certain features of really existing people. Talking, for example, about the difficult childhood of little David, about his work in the wine warehouse and about the collapse of his childhood hopes, Dickens described his own experiences of those years when as a child he worked in the factory waksa .. He spoke about his legal studies, but completely changed the conditions in which these classes took place; he described his studies with stenography, making David a parliamentary reporter, but did not tell anything about the gradual transformation of his from a newspaper reporter into a famous writer. Illustrations: "Phys" (X.) N. Brown), Translation: Alexandra Vladimirovna Krivtsova and Evgeny Lann. Comments: Eugene Lann
