For the first time in the newspaper "Priazovsky krai" (Rostov-on-Don), 1899, No 309, November 25, entitled "In the bowels of the earth" with the dedication of A. I. K-wow. A. and . Kuprin knew the life and work of the miners well . When he was in the Donbass (in 1896), the writer himself descended into coal mines. Impressions taken from here gave Kuprin material for a large essay "In the main mine", which was published in 1899 in the newspaper "Kiev word" (No. 3991, February 18, and No. 3995, February 22).
