Saint Theophan the Recluse (1815-1894) left an extensive and truly precious spiritual literary heritage. numerous works on Christian morality, essays outlining the basics of patristic psychology, translations of ascetic writing (including the translation of "Compassion"), the deepest interpretations of Holy Scripture, which significantly enriched Russian biblical studies . He performed a real creative feat, and one of his biographers could rightfully claim that in their fruitfulness the works of St. Theophanes are comparable with the works of the Holy Fathers of the IV-th century - the Golden Age of Byzantium. At the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church, dedicated to the millennium of the Baptism of Russia, Theophanes the Recluse was numbered among the saints . The decision of the Council was noted: : The profound theological understanding of Christian teaching, as well as its experimental execution, and as a result of this, the height and holiness of the saint's life allow us to look at his writings as the development of patristic teaching with the preservation of the same Orthodox purity and enlightenment."........ It is hoped that the present work offered to the attention of the reader will help him to find correct and accurate guidance on the path of salvation and will contribute to the great cause of our spiritual revival.
