Historical and literary studies of the outstanding British scientist and thinker Clive Staples Lewis (1898–1963), known in Russia primarily for his artistic and theological works, are translated into Russian for the first time. In his works, Lewis demonstrates the ability to look at the object of study through the eyes of a contemporary, distinguishing the intentions and assessments of ancient authors from later interpretations. "Allegory of Love" (1936) is devoted to the European allegorical tradition, from the Provencal poetry of the XI century to the Renaissance in England. In his Preface to Paradise Lost (1942), the author examines the nature of epic poetry, Milton's theology, and criticizes romantic interpretations of his poem. The Abandoned Image (1964) is Lewis' last book, in which he reconstructs a picture of the world of medieval man, an image rejected by modern times.
