Frenchman Joseph Kessel's book Army of Shadows - about the Gaullist resistance in France during the war. Although it is, of course, a "prose of war" and not a documentary book, yet it was written on the basis of the author's own impressions and his acquaintances. A Kessel during the war was a pilot who maintained communication between the London headquarters of Charles de Gaulle and resistance groups in France. He knows what he is writing about. Of course, it is impossible not to remember that the entire Resistance lost 15 thousand people during the war - a little more than a division. It cannot be ignored that most of these people fell at the hands of the French themselves, very many of whom supported Pétain, Laval and Doriot. And that the images and actions of these people are evaluated by modern historians and ordinary Frenchmen for a long time not so sharply negative as in the book of Kessel, with a publicistic focus understandable for wartime.
