In the novel "Omu" by the famous American writer Herman Mel-Villa (1819-1891 gg. ), first published in 1847. , tells about the further adventures of the hero of the first book of Melville - "Tipi". Once on board the English schooner, he, along with the rest of the sailors for refusing to continue sailing, was landed in Tahiti. The description of life in Tahiti and the neighboring islands, the conduct of the English missionaries on them, the behavior of the French, who had just taken possession of the islands of the Society, is devoted to a significant part of the book. Types of English Consuls , Captain of the schooner and his senior assistant , Ship's Doctor , Seamen and a number of Polynesians , have already experienced the pernicious influence of the most negative aspects of European civilization but partly preserved their former virtues - honesty , Kindness , Hospitality. Sympathy of the author, the romantic rebel and opponent of modern bourgeois culture, is entirely on the side of the simple islanders. Melville himself swam on whaling schooners in Oceania when he was young, and both of his novels, Typi and Omu, are largely autobiographical. Prim.
