Along with such popular names as Matsuo Basyo, Yosa-no Buson, Kobayashi Issa, Matsunaga Teitoku, Ihara Saikaku, Kamo Mabuti, Ozawa Roan Rai Sanyo or Inok Ryokan, the reader will find in the book many new authors whose works adorn the gold fund of Japanese and world literature. The collection presents a rich palette of poetic genres: philosophic and landscape trite haiku, refined five hundred waka (tank), samples of lyrical and didactic poetry in Chinese kanxi, as well as poems by Zen masters and mentors , in which the subtlety of the aesthetic world view is combined with the emotional tension of continuous self-knowledge. A valuable addition to the masterpieces of the classics are collections of humorous poetry (senryu, kka, haikai-no-renga), as well as translations of folk songs put together by the inhabitants of the “funny neighborhoods”. The book recreates the historical panorama of Japanese poetry of the Edo era in its amazing genre and stylistic diversity and introduces the reader to the largest poets of the period of the Japanese cultural renaissance, which stretched for the entire period of self-isolation of Japan.
