Piero Piambo is a successful portraitist, a social lion; he is welcome in the most fashionable New York living rooms of the late 19th century. But despite his success, he is fed up with a feeling of creative dissatisfaction, so he happily grabs an unusual order from a certain Mrs. Sharbuk - to paint her portrait without seeing her, but only talking to her from behind the screen. But while the amazing Mrs. Charbuk tells him about his amazing life, the city is shocked by a series of bloody, unmotivated murders, and Piambo begins to understand that they are somehow connected to his mysterious customer.
