Expanding their possessions, conquering all the new stars, humanity has divided into rival factions. In the twenty-sixth century, the collectivists are fighting the supporters of “democratic anarchy”. When it seems that victory is near, co-clusters discover in space an approaching swarm of ancient thinking machines that call themselves inhibitors and consider their main task the destruction of any biological mind. The co-members do not believe that they will be able to withstand the onslaught of this new enemy, and intend to escape, putting all other human tribes under the blow of inhibitors. Only one of them, the old warrior Clavaine, prefers to stay to organize a desperate resistance.
