The collapse of the great Empire, which united twenty-five million inhabited worlds, is inevitable. This conclusion was reached by mathematician Gary Seldon, the creator of the science of the future - psychohistory. In order to build a new civilization on the ruins of the old one, Seldon and his associates are preparing the creation of two academies, one of which will be engaged in preserving the knowledge accumulated by mankind, and the second, secret, will be invisible to guide the process of recreating the Empire. But while the Academy has not yet been created, Seldon has to start intrigues, enter into dubious alliances, sometimes go against his principles in order to prevent the Empire from falling apart before the deadline.
