The plot of the novel is based on real events: the bride, secretly married to another, is married to the unloved. On the wedding night in a fit of madness, she tries to kill the groom, and a month later dies. The Legend of Montrose describes the events of Montrose's uprising in 1645 against Parliament in defense of Charles I. The main active force of the uprising was the Scottish Highlanders, who fought for the liberation of their country.
