“The concepts that feed and guide our modern journalism are so confused and full of contradictions that the most elementary questions, such as: do we need literature in the sense of the highest spiritual creativity? – cannot be called resolved and therefore unnecessary. The confusion of concepts reaches the point that the word literature itself has lost its definite meaning, and everyone interprets it in accordance with the mental level at which they stand and the direction of the literary movement to which they belong. While some consider literature to be a body of social ideas and an expression of national self-consciousness at a given moment of development, others understand by this word all sorts of magazine and newspaper rubbish and do not distinguish a writer who carried a well-known worldview from a literary man in the street who denounced anonymous correspondence.
