The play was written in March 1923 . in Berlin . The choice of theme and plot of the play was influenced by two events in Nabokov's life: the tragic death of his father, V. D. Nabokov, killed March 28, 1922 . , and the dissolution of her engagement to Svetlana Sievert in January 1923. The theme of the “inertia” of life after death was then developed by Nabokov in the story “The Catastrophe” (1924) and the story “Watch” (1930).
