During the Reagan presidency, around 1983, Soviet experts “convincingly” argued that in exactly twenty years the American economy, due to the huge national debt, would face an inevitable collapse, which would lead, if not to the liquidation of the United States as such, then to a sharp decrease in their economic and political influence in the world. The communist “forecasters” have hit the mark. Soon the Soviet Union itself ceased to exist, and the United States became the world's only superpower, the absolute leader in the field of high technology. And if before Reagan’s presidency it was possible to talk about narrowing the gap between the United States and other world centers of power in the sphere of economics and politics, in particular the European Union and Japan, now this gap is only growing.
