Upon returning to Russia, White presented his impressions of Berlin in the collection-essay “One of the inhabitants of the kingdom of shadows”, where he called Berlin a “bourgeois sodom”, a “cocaine” city, a place of “organized madness”. Berlin of the postwar period seemed to him not so gloomy as, for example, Dostoevsky, but rather terrible. Everything he saw - people, their clothes, houses, and even the Berlin skies - all acquired a gray-brown and brown even color, which involuntarily suggests the state of the poet-prophet in anticipation of the approach of the brown plague.
