In the last twenty years, education has penetrated so rapidly and so widely into almost all classes of our society that reading has not remained a luxury, as it was before, but has become a necessary necessity of life. Proof of this is the extraordinary development of our journal literature, embracing all branches of human knowledge, and therefore requiring the study of such subjects, which previously, people who did not belong to the number of scientists did not have to hear. With constant reading of magazines and books, concepts, terms and names began to meet, completely unfamiliar to readers with education only in general. These terms and titles had to be studied in order to fully understand the book or journal article. But as the branches of human knowledge are too diverse, there was a need for books, which would contain a brief and distinct, but powerful collection of various articles for reference. Despite the fact that we still have a publication in which it would be possible to cope with different subjects, and in which every educated person needs These reasons prompted us to compile the "Reference Encyclopedic Dictionary" as the most necessary publication at the present time, when our literature began to thoroughly acquaint readers with the results of science and art. The best proof of the need for a "Correct Encyclopedic Dictionary" for Russia can be found in the fact that even in Germany and France, where there is already a rich encyclopedic literature, reference dictionaries published in recent times, are accepted by the public with special attention. When we read a book, we meet some contemplative modern face and would like to have them about it though an approximate concept. Is it time for us to read a lengthy biography of this face in a large dictionary when our attention is focused on this face only in passing; is it time for us to study a lengthy article, e.g.. When we read the book, we want to know what it means. In such cases, very sufficient information about the main features of the subject. The Encyclopedic Dictionary published by us has been compiled for one reference. There are articles quite large, but their volume is caused by the vastness of the subject itself, such as. biographies of our Sovereigns and famous people of Russia, descriptions of parts of the world and states, descriptions of our gubernias, etc. d.
