2nd Edition . — Arzamas, 1897. In the second half of the XIX century, an Orthodox spiritual mission operated in Japan, as a result of the activities of this mission, tens of thousands of Japanese people believed in Christ and were baptized in the Orthodox Church. In the 1890s, Archimandrite Sergius (Stragorodsky), the future Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia (1943-1944) served in the mission. He regularly recorded events and also his impressions of Japan, its people and culture, as a result, a highly artistic work and rich missionary material.
