“On Icon Painting” is a book written by Mogilev Archbishop Anatoly Martynovsky, whose name before his tonsure was Augustin Vasilyevich (1793 - 1872). *** This book was first published in 1845, and republished again in 1867. As a person very passionate about painting, Anatoly Martynovsky was very interested in the history of icon painting. It was this passion that gave a powerful impetus to the study of the icon as a work of art, as well as to the further writing and publication of a book on this issue. In addition to the work “On Icon Painting”, he also wrote some other, less well-known works: “Faith, Hope and Love”, “Leisures of Archbishop Anatoly”. Anatoly Martynovsky was an extremely progressive and educated person for his time. As a bishop, he perfectly understood his role and took care of the education of his flock, built new churches and decorated existing ones.
