Written in Beverly Hills shortly after the triumphant publication of the novel in the United States, the script was called "the best script ever created in Hollywood" and formed the basis of the eponymous picture shot by Stanley Kubrick. Unlike the novel, the script has different lighting, otherwise arranged sophites, a different angle of view, differently distributed roles. Translating the novel into the language of drama, Nabokov changed thousands of details, came up with new characters, wrote episodes that allow a new look at the unique pattern of the tragic life of Humbert and Lolita. In 1973, releasing the script of Lolita as a separate book, Nabokov completed the artistic development of his long-standing plan, first outlined in 1939 in the story “The Wizard”. This edition presents the first translation of the Lolita script into Russian and includes, in addition to the author's foreword , preserved in the archive of Nabokov episodes from the early version of the script, Letters from Vladimir and Vera Nabokov to Stanley Kubrick and other recipients regarding the film adaptation of Lolita as well as a detailed essay by the translator and compiler of the book Andrei Babikov , Revealing hitherto unknown aspects of the art of the great writer .
