As a writer, Laurie was strongly influenced by his great contemporary Jules Verne. At least two novels by J. Verna's "Five Hundred Million Begums" and "South Star" were originally written by Laurie, and then (with Laurie's consent and under pressure from J.) Etzel permanent publisher of J. Verna) corrected, edited and completely rewritten by J. Vern. Laurie’s own work consists of 10 novels, mainly sci-fi, adventure: “Exiles of the Earth: Selene’s Company” (1887), “Atlantis” (1895), “New York Brest in seven hours” (rus.) per. 1890) et al.
