Bernard Shaw fought for the affirmation of social drama not only as a playwright but also as a critic. At a time when his first plays were making their way onto the stage, he accepted an invitation from Frank Harris, editor of the Saturday Review, to become a theatre reviewer for this weekly publication. Shaw's reviews were printed in this body from January 1895 to May 1898. American critic James Haneker collected and published them in two volumes. Full set of reviews 1895-1898 . The show included in its collection of essays titled "Our Theatres in the Nineties", where they occupied three volumes. The rest of his articles Shaw collected in the book "Portraits with a pen and reviews" .. A large number of statements about the drama contain various prefaces by Shaw. American researcher D.
