Moralistic literature in France has deep and diverse traditions. It developed side by side with other prose genres - a novel, a short story, a story, sometimes on equal terms, sometimes receding into the background, and sometimes obscuring in the minds of readers its more spectacular and entertaining rivals. The very words “moralist”, “moralistic” are associated for the Russian ear with preaching, moralizing and inevitably boring reading. Meanwhile, the literature in question was least of all pursuing normative goals. The task she set for herself was to know a person in all his complexity, to reveal the secret springs of human behavior, his psyche and its manifestations in social being.
