The present "Warning" of the Monk Macarius of Optina is addressed to those who wish to pass the intelligent Jesus prayer, but who do not have skillful teachers for it. However, equally, the creation of Elder Macarius can be addressed to all Christians as a advice not to seek in themselves high spiritual gifts and the same conditions, but to humbly follow the path of fulfilling Christ’s commandments, relying in everything on God’s will. At the same time, St. Macarius does not seek to turn the monks and pious laity of his day away from the saving and holy fathers of the commanded prayer in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ .. He only claims that the measure of the new beginning is an oral prayer, not accompanied by any “artistic methods”, information about which is contained in the patristic creations.
