The book is the first after the classical works of domestic historians of the XIX century monographic study of the sections of Poland in 1772, 1793 and 1795 and the role of Russian diplomacy in them. Sections - the starting point of the Polish question, which remained at the center of European politics for a century and a half - are considered in the context of the formation of the system of international relations in Central and Eastern Europe. The work is written on the basis of sources of Russian and foreign archives, a number of which are first introduced into scientific circulation.
