D. I. Blokhintsev (1908-1979) was an outstanding physicist whose interests spanned a remarkable range of disciplines. He authored numerous monographs and a classic textbook on quantum mechanics, played a pivotal role as the scientific leader in the development of the world’s first nuclear power plant, and was the founding director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. A Hero of Socialist Labor and a recipient of many of the highest honors in the USSR, including the Lenin and State Prizes, he was also a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences and a member of several international academies. The first volume presents a concise account of D. I. Blokhintsev's scientific and public activities, an expanded abstract of his scientific works written by the author himself, and articles on optics, solid-state physics, acoustics, and nuclear energy. Additionally, it includes autobiographical materials, key dates from his life and work, a comprehensive bibliography of his publications, as well as reminiscences from those fortunate enough to have worked and interacted with Dmitry Ivanovich. The second volume of selected works features contributions on fundamental issues in quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, and elementary particle theory, along with discussions on broader scientific topics. This book is intended for researchers—particularly theoretical physicists, nuclear energy specialists, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates in universities—who seek to delve into the profound legacy of D. I. Blokhintsev.
